Vietnam Paper Industry's capacity reach 70% deisgn-capacity, and satisfy market demand only 35% as domestic product's quality limitation
- Industry Outlook 2006: Vietnam has produced totally 960,00.00 tons all kinds of paper in this year. The average growth rate for all kinds of paper is 16.32% year on year: paper for printing newspaper growed +35%, printing & writing paper +20 %, packaging paper +16%
Total quantity of imported paper is about 800,000 mt (2006). VPC has forecasted market demand reaching 1.33 million mt. Domestic supply takes cover about 61.9%. In year 2006, VPC will invest about 781 billlion VND to enhance local manufacturing capability. Export target in year 2006 for printing and writing paper is about 21 million USD (+43% yoy)
- Paper Mills: There are serveral mills hava capacity over 1000 tons per month. Viet Nam now hosts more than 300 paper production facilities: 28 State-owned mills and 272 from other sectors, including private and joint-stock firms. Most mills's technologies remained 10 to 20 years behind other countries. However, Bai Bang and Tan Mai are two of serveral plans have installed modern processing technologies.
-In the last survey of VNPCC, Vietnam has almost 1,000 carton box makers, in which 70-80% boxes are made for export products. As the result, the recyle paper for used carton boxes are shortage for the local kraft paper manufacturure. In while, the import kraft paper is raised sharply in end-2007 (30-50%)
-Most of local paper mills produce printing and writing papers. The resource of pulp in domestic forest is less and less. It causes the demand of raw material always higher than supply
-As last report of Vietnam Paper Association, paper industry in Vietnam still focus mainly to printing paper and writing paper. As while, packaging paper also needs to import quite big quantity every year.
- There are recent waves of investment in Vietnam Paper Industry. Som major projects like: SCG Paper Group (220 mil USD), Lee & Man Paper (480 mil USD), Sojitz and Oji Paper (1.2 billion USD)… Once these projects are completed (est. 2009 - 2010), it has increased domestic supply significantly.
- Since 01.Jan.2008, Pulp and waste paper served for paper production will be get import tax exemption. The new tariff has been changed from 3% (in year 2007) to be 0%.
- Up to the end of Nov.2007, Vietnam has imported almost 115,000 mt pulp and 761,00 mt all kinds of paper.
