Industry Background
The "Carbon Summit, Carbon Neutral" initiative, established to address global climate change and reduce pollution and carbon emissions, is driving a low-carbon transformation in China's industries, which has had a transformative impact on the automotive and plastics industries.
Automotive lightweighting has become the development trend of the traditional fuel car industry. Experiments have proved that fuel efficiency improves by 6%-8% if the car weight reduces by 10%. For every 100 kg reduction in the overall mass of the car, the fuel consumption of 100 km can be reduced by 0.3~0.6 litres.
Under the new trend, plastic parts are moving towards thin wall and low density, which in turn has higher requirements on the physical properties of modified plastic materials (thin wall and high rigidity), as well as on the amount of talc filling (low filling).
Talc Introduction
Talc, chemically known as hydrated magnesium silicate is the softest mineral in nature, with a Mohs hardness of 1. The molecular formula of talc is Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, and the oxidation formula is 3MgO.4SiO2.H2O.
The theoretical composition of pure talc is 63.47% SiO2, 31.68% MgO, and 4.75% H2O. The basic structural unit of talc: two layers of tetrahedral composed of silicon and oxygen atoms sandwiched by a layer of octahedral composed of magnesium atoms, oxygen atoms and hydroxyl groups.
Talc is chemical stability, lipophilic, hydrophobic, lamellar structure, and low Mohs hardness. In the plastic industry, talc is widely used as a functional filler due to its good lamellar structure, high purity and high aspect ratio. Besides tensile properties, talc also increases the ageing resistance, heat distortion temperature (HDT), shrinkage and CLTE.
LAmax™ Introduction
LAmax is produced from talc ore with high purity and high lamellarity. Aihai uses state-of-the-art jet-mills to delaminate the talc lamellar structure while maintaining its high aspect ratio.
LAmax™ Series In Automotive Lightweight Material Applications
1)Conceptual design - Thin wall
High requirement for the rigidity of the material to achieve thin-walled lightweight material.
Compare to a traditional ultrafine powder, LAmax S5000L give a significant effect to increase in stiffness. At the same time, this grade does not impact the production efficiency even loading at a higher amount.
2)Conceptual design - Low density
Lightweighting is achieved by reducing the density of the material, which requires a low mineral filling
amount.
LAmax S5000L and LAmax C05L can achieve the same material properties with a lower filling ratio.
3)Conceptual design -Foaming
To reduce the weight through the material foaming technology and reach a balance between stiffness and toughness. LAmax E05L provide better mechanical properties and cell distribution after the gas foaming process.
